Experience the Alaska Cruise of the Inside Passage
Eons ago, the Inside Passage was originally carved by the movement of massive glaciers flowing southward under the pressure of tons of ice, leaving a series of islands, bays, and fjords in their wake. It winds through southernmost region of Alaska, beginning near the Queen Charlotte Islands of Canadian British Columbia and extending north to the town of Skagway, Alaska. Many choose the area as the site for their Alaska cruise.Surprisingly, the waterway tends to have the warmest temperatures and get the most precipitation in Alaska making cruise conditions very favorable. This climate led to the growth of the massive Tongass National Forest, the world's northernmost rain forest, a destination in itself.
Unique History and Wildlife
The unusual geology created a unique environment of lush islands and stunning scenery ideal for the Alaska cruise tour. It has also proven to be an ideal home for a wide range of wildlife, including sea birds, otter, seal and sea lions, moose, wolves, and bear. The ocean nearby is a favorite location for porpoise and whale watching and is the home to a variety of species from Humpbacks to Killer Whales.
Fish thrive in the rivers and sea. Some leave behind the Alaska cruise for the sport of fishing in these waters. The bounty of fish even earned Ketchikan, a town along the Inside Passage, the moniker, "Salmon Capital of the World."
The influx of settlers, from native Indians to Russians, has given rise to a vibrant cultural heritage. Among tribes native to the region are the Tlingit and Haida Indians. Tlingit Indians lived on the western coast, their villages situated between the water and the lush forests.
The Haida Indians, expert fishers and hunters, are increasing their population once again, after nearly dying off in the 1890's. An Indian Reservation is located in the town of Metadata. Ketchikan, the cruise stopever, is the home of the world's largest collection of totem poles.
The Russian Influence
The Russian influence can still also be strongly felt, especially in
the Russian-American capital of Sitka. In the early days, Sitka was the
headquarters for the original Russian-America Company and capital of
Alaska before the present-day capital of Juneau.Because the outer islands provide protection from storms and raging waters to sea-faring vessels, the Passage is an oft-used shipping route. Many visitors also enjoy their Alaska cruises by exploring the Inside Passage.
A traditional large Alaska cruise ship allows tourists to experience the beauty of the land and sea while enjoying first-class dining and entertainment. Most ships have frequent excursions to give you a first-hand view of the interesting sights and activities.
Nosing into lesser-seen areas with up close views of wildlife and natural beauty, smaller cruise ships and yachts preserve the immediacy of the environment while still allowing for the comforts of the traditional Alaska cruise. Many times the passenger list is so limited that true friendships begin in the beautiful cruise surroundings.
An alternative Alaska cruise is sailing the Inside Passage via ferry. Putting out to sea several days with your car stowed below provides a relaxing break for a road trip. The ferry has the advantages of stopping and starting often, and allowing you to disembark with your vehicle on an adventure of your own. This also extends your cruise by allowing you to explore the sights at your own pace.
